Shank’s Mare offers in-store clinics designed to familiarize you with the outdoor activities we offer Once you learn the basics of kayaking, hiking, x-c skiing, etc. we can then direct you in to one of our many lesson programs to further your knowledge. Our goal is to provide you with the skills to make all your outdoor adventures safe and enjoyable.

Kayak Safety Clinic

Sat., September 27, 2008, 2:30-3:30pm

This dry land clinic will introduce you to the skills and techniques you should possess to be safe on the water. We’ll cover kayak design and outfitting, paddling conditions, safety gear, and what skills a paddler should possess. Once you have this information, we hope that you will follow it up with one of our on-water kayak classes taught throughout the paddling season. Be safe, have fun and GO PLAY OUTSIDE!

Introduction to Geocaching

Sat., Oct. 25, 2008, 10:30am-12:30pm

Learn about the new sport of “geocaching” at Shank’s Mare. This worldwide scavenger hunt type activity incorporates information from the worldwide web, with map and compass skills and utilizing a hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) computer. “Team Shank’s Mare” has been enjoying this sport over the winter, and we want to share the fun with you. This clinic will familiarize you with the principles of geocaching, and we’ll practice finding some “caches”. Once you get the hang of this, go out on your own or join us for some of our “Geocaching Rendezvous” scheduled in April where you’ll form teams and navigate our own cache course followed by dinner in “The Rookery”. We’ll supply the materials for this clinic.
