Introduction to Geocaching

Sat., Oct. 25, 2008, 10:30am-12:30pm

Learn about the new sport of “geocaching” at Shank’s Mare. This worldwide scavenger hunt type activity incorporates information from the worldwide web, with map and compass skills and utilizing a hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) computer.  “Team Shank’s Mare” has been enjoying this sport over the winter, and we want to share the fun with you.  This clinic will familiarize you with the principles of geocaching, and we’ll practice finding some “caches”.  Once you get the hang of this, go out on your own or join us for some of our “Geocaching Rendezvous” where you’ll form teams and navigate our own cache course followed by dinner in “The Rookery”.  We’ll supply the materials for this clinic.

Fee: Free Program

Geocaching Evening Rendezvous

Sat., Nov. 1, 2008, 2:00-7:00pm

What is a “Muggle” anyway? Besides the Harry Potter reference, a “muggle” is any person who hasn’t tried the new sport of geocaching. Join us for an afternoon of outdoor hiking and geocaching followed by dinner in “The Rookery”. We’ll provide you with the GPS units and basic instruction, for you in teams, and turn you loose to find Shank’s Mare’s hidden caches.  You’ll hike through fields and woods in your quest, and log the treasure in each hiding place.  The team with the most treasure wins!  Collect your prize and compare your adventures over a hearty dinner in “The Rookery”. If you want to familiarize yourself ahead of time with geocaching, come to one of our free Introduction to Geocaching Clinics.  If you have your own GPS unit, you may use it – call us ahead of time and we will make arrangements to email you the cache coordinates just prior to this event.

Fee: Members - $35.00/Person, Non-Members - $39.00/Person.

First Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Paddle Picnic

Sat., Nov. 15, 2008, 10:30-3:00pm

Fall is one of the most beautiful times on the water.  For our experienced kayakers who don’t want to put their paddling gear away, join Shank’s Mare for our First Annual Pre-Thanksgiving Paddle Picnic.  Our guides lead you on a paddle tour of the Susquehanna, and along the way we’ll have a special stop for a delicious picnic and a warming fire.  We recommend wetsuits and an appropriately outfitted kayak for this tour. (You can purchase a wetsuit at Shank’s Mare or we have rentals available).  There should be plenty of wildlife to spot during this quiet time of the year, and the fall landscape will provide some spectacular views for us. While this paddle will be leisurely it is for experienced paddlers who have the appropriate equipment. If you have questions regarding your gear, just ask the friendly staff at Shank’s Mare.  Fee includes guide, tour, and picnic.

Fee – Members $54/Person, Non-Members $60/Person

Sunday Brunch Geocaching Rendezvous

Sun., Nov. 16, 2008, 9am-Noon

Begin your Sunday morning enjoying the natural beauty of the Susquehanna River.  Our rendezvous begins with a delicious brunch in “The Rookery”. As you are enjoying your meal, we will give a short orientation to geocaching. Participants will then form into teams and take a fall hike following our geocache course. There will be clues and a theme for each team to follow.  You’ll use your heads and your feet to see what team wins our course! Following the hike, meet back at Shank’s Mare for the “awards” ceremony. It’s a healthy and fun way to begin your Sunday! Program includes hike, gps unit to use, and meal.

Fee – Members $30/Person, Non-Members $34/Person
