Having been born b.c. (before computer), the parental directive “Go Play Outside” was the catalyst for countless hours exploring the fields, streams, woods, and neighborhood that surrounded our various homes. From building forts to “laying out for bats”, these simple activities fueled by our imagination and limited only by the needs to eat, sleep, and go to school, created the foundation for the love of the outdoors and wonders of the world we live in. I enjoy these wonders to this day.
Kayak lessons
Since 1978, my wife, Liz, and I have owned and operated Shank’s Mare Outfitters, a shop specializing in outdoor activities such as kayaking, backpacking, and cross country skiing. Participation and education have always been key elements of our programs that include lessons, trips, kid’s summer camps, and school field trips. Over the years, disturbing trends in our youth programs have become more apparent. Lack of physical activities, both in and out of school, poor diets, and lack of time exploring and enjoying the outdoors are a few. The results for the kids are poor physical conditioning, obesity, and often unwarranted and unnatural fears of the world around them.

Paddling on the Susquehanna River
We feel strongly that if kids have an opportunity to experience the joy of the natural world rather than the joystick of a virtual one, it can only result in a more positive outcome. Physical challenges build self-esteem. Group participation builds tolerance and teamwork. Understanding the role of the smallest critter in the stream not only gives us purpose, but purpose to all living things.
Exploring Fishing Creek
There are many kids that have the opportunity to “go play outside” and simply choose not to. However, there are many with the will but not the way. Those kids could benefit the most from such a positive experience. We have discovered many great organizations and programs offering outdoor programs to disadvantaged youth. It has been our goal from inception to donate a portion of “G.P.O.” profits to such programs. Program selection is determined annually.
Kayaking the Susquehanna
Having been teenagers of the ‘60’s and young adults of the ‘70’s, we wanted to change the world. Being somewhat older and hopefully wiser in the ‘00’s, we are happy to say it’s still possible – if only one child at a time!!
