For those who want a thorough instruction of Touring Kayak Skills, this 5-hour long class is for you. Taught in cockpit-style kayaks, the class begins with on-land introduction to kayaks, paddles and safety gear.  We’ll discuss getting in and out of the kayak properly, body position in the water, footbraces, and how to put the sprayskirt on properly.  Paddle strokes will be demonstrated.  Following a lunch break, (food available at Shank’s Mare’s Lock 2 Café), students will begin their on-water instruction with wet exits. Paddlers will then get acclimated to their kayaks on the water followed by a complete review of techniques. Students then receive instruction on self and group rescues.  If time allows, a short paddle tour will complete the class.  Then, with practice, the skills learned in this class will provide a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience.  The class fee includes properly outfitted kayak, sprayskirts, paddles and pfd’s.
