First Annual Susquehanna River/Conejohela Flats Island Clean-up
Thanks to all who helped with the First Annual Susquehanna River Island Clean-up on Saturday, June 7, 2008. We had three pontoon boats and an enthusiastic crew of volunteers who braved an incredibly hot day. We were able to remove lots of tires and plastic from the islands at the Conejohela Flats. We solved a few logistics problems for our first year as well. We look forward to working with the Watershed Alliance of York, the Susquehanna Riverkeeper, and the Codorus Creek Improvement Partnership to plan for next year’s clean-up. In the meantime, as you are boating out there pick up some garbage and make the waterways an great experience for everyone to enjoy.

LOWER SUSQUEHANNA RIVER WATER TRAIL GETS NATIONAL RECREATION TRAIL STATUS
After working since last fall with the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership, National Park Service and Susquehanna River Water Trail Association (and many other partners), the Lancaster-York Heritage Region recently learned that the Susquehanna River Water Trail – Middle and Lower Sections have been designated a National Recreation Trail!
The designation applies to the water trail from Sunbury to the Maryland border. It was officially designated a National Recreation Trail by Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne. The Susquehanna River Water Trail is the third water trail in Pennsylvania to achieve National Recreation Trail status, joining sections of the Delaware River and Schuylkill River water trails. The Susquehanna River Water Trail is part of a statewide network of 51 National Recreation Trails totaling more than 1500 miles. Designated National Recreation Trails can qualify for a range of benefits, including promotion, technical assistance, networking and access to funding opportunities.
Maps of both these trails are available at Shank’s Mare and in our e-commerce store.
Our thanks go to the Lancaster-York Heritage Region for all their efforts in gaining this status, and on-going work in establishing partners who are working to protect our scenic Susquehanna.
