Liz & Steve Winand

Founders of Shank’s Mare in 1978, Liz and Steve offer their enthusiasm and love of the outdoors to every customer of Shank’s Mare. Steve has over 25 years of experience in paddling, hiking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. He is our original guide, instructor and fearless leader! Liz is the “detail person”, and also spends a lot of time in the kitchen creating the delicious provisions for Shank’s Mare programs.

Devin Winand

Devin has been working off and on at Shank’s Mare almost his whole life since he is the son of Liz and Steve. Devin is a graduate of Penn State, and a combat Army veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom. He teaches kayaking, guides trips and tours, works with the Kid’s Camp, and shares his years of experience in the shop as well.

Gretchen Young

Gretchen is a Shank’s Mare veteran with over 10 years at the shop. Gretchen uses her Master’s Degree in Wildlife and Fisheries from Penn State to lead our field trip and aquatic studies program. As the mother of three, her shop time is part-time, but you will see her smiling face continuing to do special programs for Shank’s Mare.

Meredith Holt Grim

Meredith has worked off and on at Shank’s Mare since she was a student at Millersville University from which she graduated. Following two tours of duty in Iraq, Meredith’s husband Jason will now be stationed in Pennsylvania, so we are thrilled to have “Mere” returning to Shank’s Mare once again. Meredith is a wonderful instructor and guide, and her enthusiasm for Shank’s Mare is contagious!

Jonathan Darby

Jon has been with Shank’s Mare for two years, and continues to be our “green” consultant as he shares his concern for the environment and work experience on an organic farm. He does a great job in the shop as well as with our Kid’s Camp and guiding kayak outings. His experience in “family” kayaking with wife Erin and children Elizabeth and Abrahm help Shank’s Mare cater to this aspect of touring as well.

Kyle Lefever

Kyle was our summer intern last year, and since graduating from Lockhaven University with his degree in Outdoor Recreation, has joined us full time. Kyle helps us with Kid’s Camp, kayak tours, and shop duties, and is our “team building” exercise leader for our school programs and more. We welcome his expertise in all kinds of outdoor games!
