Riverkeeper Tour #1 – Falmouth to Vinegar Ferry

Sat. July 18, 9:30am-2:30pm

Explore the Lake Frederic area of the Susquehanna River with Shank’s Mare guides and Ted Evgeniadis, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper.  As our guides introduce you to the unique geologic potholes and riffles of this area of the river, Ted will tell you how Brunner’s Island and TMI energy facilities effect the river itself.  You’ll also explore where the Conewago and Codorus Creeks empty into the river and their effects on water quality and other environmental issues of the river.

Fee - $98/Person includes kayak, gear, shuttle, guided tour and lunch. $83/Person if you have your own gear.


Riverkeeper Tour #2 – Vinegar Ferry to John Wright (Wrightsville)

Head downriver on this historic part of the Susquehanna River.  Shank’s Mare guides will lead you past Chicques Rock and along the footprints of the Susquehanna Canal.  Riverkeeper Ted Evgeniadis will inform you about how industry and development along the river over the last several hundred years have left a mark on the region and the environmental issues that the Riverkeeper monitors as a result.

Riverkeeper Tour #3 – John Wright (Wrightsville) to Shank’s Mare

Head downriver from Wrightsville and enter the area of the Susquehanna called Lake Clarke formed by the Safe Harbor Dam at its southernmost point.  Explore the entry of many creeks on this stretch of the river including Kreutz Creek, Kline’s Run, Canadochly Creek, Cabin Branch, Fox, Bull Run, and Fishing Creek.  Riverkeeper Ted Evgeniadis will outline how each creek brings its on impact to the river, and how the Safe Harbor Dam traps much of the sediment etc. deposited along this stretch of the river.

Riverkeeper Tour #4 – York Furnace

Explore the Lake Aldred area of the Susquehanna formed by the Holtwood Dam.  This unique area of the river includes Indian Steps and the Rock Art drawn by Native Americans who inhabited this area many hundreds of years ago.  The Conestoga River and Otter Creek flow into this part of the river, and once again, Riverkeeper Ted Evgeniadis will outline the environmental issues present in this unique and historic area of the Susquehanna.

Riverkeeper Tour #5 – Lock 15

Shank’s Mare guides will lead you through the unique rock formations that mark this area of the river and into the footprint of the Susquehanna Canal as it ran towards the Chesapeake almost 200 years ago.  There is a restored canal lock to explore at the put-in of this tour.  Muddy Run and Conowingo Dam energy facilities are in this area of the river, and Riverkeeper Ted Evgeniadis will discuss how those facilities provide both benefits and drawbacks to the Susquehanna.

Unwind Paddle Tour & Music on the River Series

This program will be offered each night during the summer when we have live music scheduled on our porch.  Shank’s Mare guides will lead you on a leisurely paddle tour along the shoreline suitable for those who have never kayaked before, or anyone who wants to enjoy a relaxing paddle.  The fee will include your kayak rental, a one hour guided paddle tour, and of course, the live music on the porch at Shank’s Mare.  On-site food service is available from a unique food truck scheduled for each Friday Nite Unwind.  What a great way to spend a summer evening at the river!  Bring chairs, blankets, etc. and BYOB welcome.  Save $10 on the fee if you have your own kayak.  Pre-registration is required for this program

hank's Mare is teaming up with our friends at The John Wright Restaurant.  Enjoy a guided kayak tour on the Susquehanna River at the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Explore the footprint of the old Susquehanna Canal and the remains of the famous bridge burned during the Civil War.  Then head to the patio at John Wright for their delicious brick oven pizza.  Register for the tour on our website.  Make your patio reservations directly with The John Wright Restaurant.  Please note that this tour meets and leaves from the boat launch at John Wright in Wrightsville.

Fall Eastern Shore Chesapeake Paddling Trip

Each year we explore some area of the Chesapeake Bay.  This trip offers great paddling with a choice of destinations depending on wind conditions. 

Lodging and meals are provided .  Accommodations are comfortable vacation home that we use as a home base. Rental kayaks are available although please note that this is NOT a beginner trip. Transportation to and from our destination is your responsibility. Shank’s Mare provides experienced trip leaders who reserve the right to determine participant’s qualifications for any trip. Our staff is available to assist with any trip planning questions.   

Pine Island, Florida Paddling Trip

Week #1 – January 31-February 6, 2019

Pine Island, Florida is a hidden gem located in the beautiful waters off Ft. Myers, FL.  This mangrove island, composed mostly of palm tree nurseries, has avoided the high rise development of many areas in southwest Florida.  You will paddle the bays, backwaters, and shorelines of the Great Calusa Blueway paddling trail, launch right from our own dock nestled in the mangroves.

Accommodations are a very comfortable waterfront home with a beautiful view of the mangroves. Greet dolphin and manatees as they visit on a regular basis. Launch kayaks and SUP’s right from our own dock. Bike 17 miles of bicycle trail accessible from the house. It’s a great way to escape the PA Winter!  Our itinerary will be very relaxed with plenty of time to paddle, bike, bird, fish and explore.  Paddle as often or as little as you would like…your relaxation is key to this special trip.

Meals including breakfast, lunch, hors d’oeuvres and dinner are provided.  Transportation to and from Pine Island is your responsibility.  Very reasonable air fares are available to the SW Florida International Airport (Ft. Myers), and there is a shuttle service from the airport to the island and our accommodations.  If you are flying, we can arrange to have equipment including kayaking gear and stand-up paddleboards for you to use.  If you choose to drive, it is a reasonable drive and you can add a variety of East Coast stops to explore on your way down or back.

Price is based on double occupancy.  No Adventure Club applies to this program.  If you are driving and bringing your own equipment, there is plenty of storage at the house.  If you are flying, we can provide equipment for you to use during your stay, and we can provide the name of the shuttle service from the airport to the house on Pine Island.
